EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Detroit based pianist Michael Zaporski has been performing and teaching both locally and internationally for over thirty years. He has been an Artist in Residence, performer and guest lecturer at the University of Dakar in Senegal West Africa, Albion College, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State and other educational institutions both national and international. The most recent being a concert lecture tour in Poland and a concert lecture performance at the ISME conference in Glasgow Scotland.

Michael Zaporski creates astonishing music that merges American jazz traditions with a West-African-influenced rhythmic dialogue. Serving as the pianist for his mentor, the late Detroit saxophonist Sam Sanders, Zaporski traveled to West Africa, and was based in Dakar, Senegal for six years.  There he taught music and performed, also traveled to Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Morocco, through the U.S. State Department. This long-time association led to performances with such renowned jazz artists as Jackie McLean, Frank Foster, Art Blakey, Pharaoh Sanders, and Donald Byrd.

Through his own group, FutureVisions, Zaporski has garnered headlining performances at jazz festivals and colleges, and has released several recordings—including “The Prophet” for orchestra, chorus, and jazz quartet—to critical acclaim. Combining adrenaline-pumping energy levels with African rhythms and haunting melodies, Zaporski continues the pursuit of excellence and individuality that is the essence of the American Jazz tradition.

Mr. Zaporski currently teaches music in the Oak Park School District where he dedicates his efforts and expertise to provide quality musical education to young people. He is also the long-time pianist with the Planet D Nonet, Detroit’s award-winning swing band and he also appears on the upcoming release by Tbone Paxton on the Detroit Music Factory label.

The current edition of FutureVisions includes Detroit saxophone great Vincent Bowens. Longtime musical/educational collaborator Joshua James on saxophones with Nathan Zaporski, bassist Ibrahim Jones and drummer Djallo Djakate.
